How is Braille added to ADA signs?

ADA Braille is contracted Grade 2 Braille with domed or rounded dots that meet the measurements in ADA Section 703.3. NameBadge manufactures compliant Braille signage in-house using two production methods, and both meet code:

  • CNC-pressed raised Braille beads: individual rounded beads are set into precisely drilled holes so each dot has the domed shape and spacing ADA requires.
  • UV-printed raised Braille: our Mimaki UV flatbed printers lay down layered, raised, domed dots directly on the sign face, curing them into place.

What are the ADA dot dimensions?

Per ADA Table 703.3.1, Braille dots have a base diameter of 0.059 to 0.063 inch, a dot height of 0.025 to 0.037 inch, and dot spacing of 0.090 to 0.100 inch. Braille must be separated at least 3/8 inch from any other tactile characters, borders, or decorative elements, and it is placed directly below the corresponding raised text.
