How Magnetic Name Tags Work

The name tag sits on the outside of your clothing. A separate magnet plate goes behind the fabric, sandwiching the material between two magnets. No pins, no holes, no clips — just a clean hold that lasts all day.

Neodymium Rare-Earth Magnets

Our dual-magnet system uses neodymium magnets — roughly 10x stronger than the ceramic magnets you'll find in cheaper tags. They hold securely through dress shirts, scrubs, aprons, polos, and light sweaters up to 1/4" thick. The tag stays put during a full shift without sliding or drooping.

Zero Clothing Damage

This is the #1 reason businesses switch to magnetic name tags. Pin-back fasteners leave holes in uniforms, polos, blouses, and scrubs. Magnets sit flat against the fabric with no contact damage at all. One hospital system told us they stopped getting uniform replacement requests the same month they switched their nursing staff to magnetic.

On and Off in Seconds

No more fumbling with pin clasps at the start of a shift. Place the tag, drop the magnet behind the fabric, done. This matters in high-turnover environments — restaurants, retail, temp staffing — where employees are putting tags on and taking them off constantly.

Magnetic vs. Pin vs. Clip: Which Fastener Is Right?

Most of our customers choose magnetic, but here's an honest comparison so you can pick what works for your team.

Fastener Hold Strength Clothing Damage Best For
Magnetic (most popular) Excellent None Healthcare, hospitality, corporate, restaurants
Pin-Back Strong Pin holes Events, budget orders, company-provided shirts
Clip (Bulldog) Moderate Minimal Pockets, lanyards, heavier fabrics

How to Wear a Magnetic Name Tag

Place the name tag on the outside of your shirt — chest level, typically on the left side. Take the backing magnet and position it behind the fabric, directly behind the tag. The two magnets lock through the fabric and that's it. Takes about two seconds.

The tag stays flat, doesn't sag, and won't rotate sideways like a clip can. When your shift ends, just pull the backing magnet off from behind. Your clothing looks exactly the same as before — no pin holes, no stretched fabric, no residue.

Who Uses Magnetic Name Tags?

We ship magnetic name tags to every kind of workplace. Here's what we've learned about what works best in each one.

Healthcare & Medical

Nurses, doctors, and clinic staff need tags that survive hand sanitizer and constant cleaning. Magnetic fasteners mean no pin holes in scrubs. Include name, credentials (RN, MD), and department so patients know who's caring for them. Note: Staff with pacemakers should use pin-back alternatives instead.

Hotels & Hospitality

The name tag is part of the uniform in hospitality. Our brushed metal tags with magnetic backing match the polish of an upscale property. Guests use staff names more often when the tag is visible and clean — and that drives the reviews.

Retail & Restaurants

Magnetic name tags remove the "do you work here?" guessing game. Staff put them on at the start of a shift and pull them off at the end — no fussing with pins. In food service, there's no loose pin that could become a safety hazard. Dark-colored tags hide stains better.

Corporate & Professional

Nobody wants pin holes in a $60 dress shirt. Engraved metal tags with magnetic backing are the standard for law firms, banks, real estate offices, and corporate lobbies. The weight and finish say "this company takes itself seriously."

Events & Conferences

Reusable magnetic name tags are a step up from disposable sticker badges at trade shows and networking events. Include your logo, attendee name, and company. Bulk pricing makes 250+ tag orders affordable, and your guests keep the tag looking sharp all day.

Education & Schools

Parents need to instantly know who's staff and who isn't. Clear name tags with role designations (Teacher, Administrator, Counselor) solve that. Note: for elementary schools, we recommend pin-back or clip over magnetic — small children may pull at magnet pieces.

Plastic or Metal? Choosing Your Magnetic Name Tag Material

Both materials come with magnetic backing. The choice depends on your environment and the impression you want to make.

Plastic Magnetic Tags

  • Full-color printing — logos, gradients, photos, edge-to-edge
  • Lightweight — you'll forget you're wearing it
  • Moisture-resistant — handles sanitizer, kitchen grease, daily cleaning
  • Scratch-resistant — UV ink is infused into the material, not printed on top
  • Best for: Healthcare, retail, food service, education, events

Starting at $7.49/tag with volume pricing

Metal Magnetic Tags

  • Premium feel — brushed aluminum or steel with real weight
  • Laser engraving — text won't fade no matter how much you clean it
  • Executive look — matches the vibe of upscale properties and offices
  • 5+ year lifespan — outlasts most employees' tenure
  • Best for: Corporate, hospitality, real estate, law firms, banking

Starting at $10.99/tag with volume pricing

Frequently Asked Questions About Magnetic Name Tags

Do magnetic name tags damage clothing?
No. The magnet sits behind the fabric, so there's zero contact with the clothing surface — no holes, no snags, no stretched material. This is the main reason businesses switch from pin-back to magnetic. We've had customers running magnetic tags on scrubs, silk blouses, and cashmere sweaters without any damage.
How strong are the magnets? Will my name tag fall off?
We use neodymium rare-earth magnets — about 10x stronger than standard ceramic magnets. The dual-magnet design holds through fabric up to 1/4" thick, which covers dress shirts, polos, scrubs, aprons, and most sweaters. Tags stay secure through a full 8-12 hour shift. The only time you might have trouble is with very heavy winter coats or thick fleece jackets.
Are magnetic name tags safe for people with pacemakers?
Anyone with a pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator should avoid wearing magnets near their chest. For these employees, we offer pin-back and clip fasteners as alternatives. It's a small percentage of any workforce, but it's worth having non-magnetic options on hand so nobody has to ask.
Can I get magnetic backing on both plastic and metal name tags?
Yes. Every name tag we make — plastic, metal, engraved, full-color — is available with magnetic backing. You choose the material and design; we add the magnetic fastener. There's no upcharge for magnetic vs. pin on standard sizes.
What sizes are available for magnetic name tags?
All standard sizes: 1" x 3" (name only), 1.5" x 3" (name + title — our most popular), 2" x 3" (name + title + department), plus custom shapes like ovals and rounded rectangles. See our name tag sizes guide for help picking the right one.
Is there a minimum order for magnetic name tags?
No minimums. You can order one magnetic name tag for a new hire or a replacement, or order 500 for a company rollout. Volume discounts apply automatically — the price per tag drops as you add more. No setup fees, no design fees.
How long does it take to receive magnetic name tags?
Standard production is 4-5 business days, then shipping adds 3-5 days. We manufacture everything in-house, so there's no waiting on overseas suppliers. Need them sooner? We offer same-day rush production for urgent orders — call us at (800) 243-9227.
Can I customize magnetic name tags with my logo and employee names?
That's what we do. Use our free online design tool to upload your logo, pick colors and layout, then add individual employee names and titles. Preview exactly what you'll get before you order. Designs are saved to your account so you can reorder for new hires anytime without starting over.
