What is a custom ID card and how do I order one?
A custom ID card is a personalized plastic credential, printed at the standard CR80 size (3.375 x 2.125 inches, the same footprint as a credit card) and normally 30 mil thick, that identifies a person and often controls building or system access. Unlike a name badge, which is worn for recognition and read across a room, an ID card is pocket or lanyard sized and usually carries a photo plus machine-readable elements.
What goes on a custom ID card?
- Photo - a full-color headshot, printed sharp from a 300 dpi or higher image.
- Name and title - the cardholder's identity and role.
- Company logo and brand colors - printed in full color.
- QR code or barcode - optional, for scanning, check-in, or linking to a profile.
What are they made of?
The standard material is PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic at 30 mil thickness, rigid enough for daily swiping, tapping, and slot punching. Composite PVC/PET is available when cards will be laminated or run through a retransfer printer. Both are produced at CR80 size.
Card, holder, and lanyard
A custom ID card pairs naturally with an accessory: slot-punch the top edge for a badge reel or clip, drop it into a rigid or vinyl badge holder, or hang it from a lanyard. That makes it easy for staff to wear a printed ID card alongside, or instead of, a wearable name badge.
How do I order one?
Order custom ID cards on the ID cards order page, or browse the broader ID cards options. For a photo-ID program, batch rollout, or help picking PVC vs. composite, request a quote and our US-based team will set it up. You can also design a wearable name badge if recognition, not access, is your goal. Every card is printed in full color in-house in the USA.
