How far apart should banner grommets be?
Grommets are the reinforced metal rings punched into a banner's hem that give you fixed, tear-resistant points to tie or bungee through. Correct spacing distributes tension so the vinyl does not sag between points or rip at a stress point.
What is the standard spacing?
- One grommet in every corner (always)
- Additional grommets every 2 to 3 feet along the top, bottom, and sides
- Grommets set into a folded and welded hem, not into a single layer of vinyl
When should I add more?
For large banners or outdoor installs exposed to wind, tighten spacing to every 18 to 24 inches. More attachment points lower the force on each grommet and reduce flapping, which is the main cause of tearing. For very windy sites, also consider a mesh banner so wind passes through.
How many grommets is that?
A 3 foot by 6 foot banner at 2 foot spacing typically uses around 8 to 10 grommets. Exact counts depend on dimensions and hem finishing.
