There is no legal standard size for student name badges. Schools typically use the same 1.5 x 3 in badge as adult staff for teachers, and a smaller 1 x 2.5 in or lanyard-card size for younger students so it is not oversized on a child.
There is no regulatory 'student' badge size, the right size comes down to legibility, not age. As a practical guide:
- Teachers and older students: the standard 1.5 x 3 in staff size works well and fits a name plus role.
- Younger students: a smaller 1 x 2.5 in badge, or a lanyard ID card, sits better on a child and is less likely to catch or overwhelm.
What matters more than size?
Readability from a few feet. Younger grades read better with larger, bolder, single-line text (first name only) rather than a compact multi-line layout. A breakaway lanyard is also a common safety choice for students who wear a badge on a neck cord.
